Some rural communities in Mtwara are located too far from a school for children to be able to walk to preschool. The first phase of our Pre-Primary Satellite took preschool to children instead, establishing 10 preschool classes in rural villages which were overseen by the nearest Primary School. Previously, children in these classes would have missed out on this vital stage of their learning, and some may not have continued to Primary School at all. We are very proud that based on the success of this pilot, our Satellite programme has now grown to a further 40 Pre-Primary Satellite classes in 2025.

Highlights

326 four year olds accessed a preschool education through EdUKaid classes, gaining new skills in literacy, numeracy and socio-emotional development.

100% of children from Satellite communities transitioned to Primary School at the end of the school year and will continue their education.

On average, children learn more in PrePrimary Satellite classes than the national average, with children scoring 92% and 81% in end of year numeracy and literacy assessments respectively.

Communities now fund 100% of teachers’ salaries through contributions, and support children’s learning through arranging sports activities and arranging lunch for children. This has led to excellent attendance across Satellite preschools - 97% in 2024!

This project has united us. It has helped us realise the power that we have as a community in making things better for our children.

From ‘under the tree’ to Lifelong Learning in two years

Many of our Preprimary satellite schools started in temporary buildings. Five of our Satellite Preschools have now registered to become fully funded and registered government Primary schools with permanent buildings. This will provide these rural areas with long term educational provision and community opportunities for growth and development, and support children’s ability to achieve their potential across generations.
