A Life Disrupted

After the death of his father, who was a police officer, Mustafa’s life took a difficult turn because his father was the only one who cared for his education due to his hearing disability. With no one to provide for his basic needs, continuing his education became a major challenge. Lacking support, Mustafa struggled to stay in school and eventually began wandering the streets, placing his future at serious risk. After the death of her husband Mustafa's mother started working at 10˚C hotel in Mikindani in order to support her family and that is where she met the EdUkaid Chair of Trustees. It was through familiarization with her that the team met Mustafa.

Edukaid chair of Trustees Mr Tim was very friendly when he visited 10 Degrees Hotel where I used to work. We became friends and that was where the team met Mustafa, they used to meet him at the church too. I shared with Mr Tim the struggle I was facing with Mustafa accessing education because of his deafness, and that was where my boy's destiny and life changed completely.

EdUkaid Steps In

EdUkaid met Mustafa during this vulnerable period and recognized both his need and his potential. The organization stepped in to provide essential support, including school materials and basic necessities, enabling Mustafa to return to school and continue his education with dignity and hope. We can vouch for Mustafa's mother as a very good supporter for her son because was there every step of his journey as his guardian and advocate helping him to achieve greatness in his academic journey.

EdUkaid’s impact extended beyond Mustafa alone. During visits to Raha leo school to see Mustafa, the organization identified that many other students were also facing similar challenges. In response, EdUkaid expanded its support to include other vulnerable children, providing food, transport support and learning materials to help ensure access to education for all by launching the Mustafa Fund. Up to date EdUkaid supports a total of 42 children at Raha leo providing them with necessities to enable them achieve their academic goal.

Academic Progress and Growth

With consistent support from EdUkaid, Mustafa successfully completed his primary education at Rahaleo Deaf Class in Mtwara, performing well in his final examinations. He then progressed to Njombe secondary school, where he completed his secondary education.

I felt joy and deep satisfaction when I successfully completed secondary school education, because it was the result of long-term effort, perseverance and dedication. It was a very important milestone in my academic life and it motivated me to continue striving for my dreams.

After secondary school Mustafa enrolled in a computer studies course at Elemi college, gaining valuable digital skills. His passion for learning and working with children made him volunteer to teach children at Rahaleo, the same primary school he attended, helping children with hearing disabilities to learn through sign language.

He later requested support from EdUkaid so that they could help him to pursue a teaching career at Mtwara Montessori teachers’ college. It was here that he studied education, with the continued support of EdUkaid and the Mustafa Fund supported him throughout his studies at the Montessori teachers’ college where he specialized in Early Childhood Education. He successfully graduated in 2025.

When I began studying Montessori at first, I felt a bit anxious and challenged because the system was different from what I was used to as I was the only deaf person in the classroom. It was a bit challenging for the teachers as well as other college mates, but to my surprise they all managed well in a very short time to understand and assist me by using sign language or in written form. As I continued learning, I started to understand it, appreciate it and to grow to love it. Especially the way it places the learner and the child at the centre of the learning process. As a result, my feelings became filled with enthusiasm, hope, and a strong desire to learn more.

A Promising Future

After graduation, Mustapha was promised a job offer from the Amani centre in Morogoro as a sign language facilitator. This achievement marks an important milestone in his journey towards independence and professional growth.

Mustapha’s journey demonstrates the power of timely, holistic support. Through education and care EdUkaid continues to transform lives, helping children not only stay in school but also build brighter, more sustainable futures.

After receiving the job offer I was excited, at the same time not believing if someone promised me a job right after my graduation, I can’t wait to start my work as a sign language facilitator to help other young children to reach their potential through sign language and I promise to share all the updates of my journey and career with the EdUkaid team so that you can see how I grow professionally.
